City of Dreams Mediterranean: From Melco Resorts & Entertainment

Greenspan were delighted to have been appointed to work on this major build for the award-winning Melco Resorts & Entertainment, which has seen the creation of a full adventure park in Cyprus for one of the largest premier integrated destination resorts in the Mediterranean region.

Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited (“Melco”) is a developer, owner, and operator of integrated resort facilities in Asia and Europe. On December 19, 2006, the Company listed on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol “MPEL”, successfully raising in excess of US$1.14 billion in the process. According to Renaissance Capital and IPOhome.com, this ranked as the fourth largest IPO in the US in 2006.

Fast-forward to 2023, Melco’s five integrated resorts in Macau, the Philippines and Cyprus set bold new standards for the industry in sustainability, with Chairman & CEO Lawrence Ho leading the drive to achieve total carbon neutrality and zero waste across all properties by 2030.

Honoured 97 stars for the third successive year by Forbes Travel Guide (2021-2023) and having attained seven Michelin-stars in Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau (2023), the ambitions of Melco Resorts & Entertainment continue to grow stronger.

City of Dreams Mediterranean is Europe’s very first integrated resort created for Melco Resorts & Entertainment, anchored by a fourteen-storey luxury hotel with 500 guest rooms and suites. It also features over 8,000 square meters of MICE space, an outdoor amphitheatre, a variety of premium dining outlets and luxury retail… and an adrenaline-fuelled adventure park filled with fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Adventure Park is a 5,000m2 outdoor experiential destination full of, well… adventures. With activities addressed for the whole family, this is the place to be for the coolest moments, endless fun and high-octane experiences.

18-Hole Adventure Golf Course

Designed to offer the absolute golf experience, the 18-Hole Adventure Golf Course, one of the most beautiful in Europe, features real elements of a full-scale golf course surrounded by trees and bushes, water hazards and sand bunkers. Visitors can tackle the challenges and find out who gets the golfing glory at the end where playability is key… and the high ropes adventure overhead can be viewed from all aspects!

Zipline Coaster

Life comes at you fast, especially when you are “flying” 8 meters high above the ground at up to 80 kph. As one of the most thrilling activities visitors will experience, the Zipline Coaster combines the high speed and excitement of a roller coaster ride, with an even more high adrenaline notion…that of almost flying surrounded by the stunning scenery of City of Dreams Mediterranean.

Climbing Wall

Visitors can experience reaching new heights admire the stunning views. Whether beginners or expert climbers, there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the challenge, have fun and exercise at the same time.

Taking all experiences into account, we worked on three different wall tracks in order to satisfy all levels of climbers with a colour system:

BLUE            Beginners (suitable for kids)

GREEN         Novice climbers

YELLOW      Expert / Pro climbers

We ensure absolute safety, as this is the first and foremost matter to consider, with the *Auto Belay System to watch over climbers, instead of manual belaying.

*(Auto belays are safety tools that allow to climb roped walls without a human belayer. Instead, the climber clips onto an auto belay device, which connects to the top of the wall. In case of losing balance, falling or upon finishing a climb, the Auto Belay slowly lowers the climber to the ground).

Our aerial adventures specialists ensured specific training and briefings were carried out extensively to ensure all parties were satisfied.

High Ropes Obstacle Courses

We wanted to, again, bring something to the forefront that would delight and challenge the whole family! We therefore created three courses in total:

Family Course – Featuring the ‘Leap of Faith’ and a mini zipline.

Adventurer Course – Distance of 5 meters high from the ground, with 13 intermediate level obstacles.

Extreme Course – Distance of 8 meters high from the ground, with 13 challenge levels to be completed.

The courses flow above the adventure golf and can be seen from all aspects of the adventure park. Visually stunning and in keeping with the beautiful aesthetic Melco wanted to incorporate, the high ropes tower with the treetops and will offer incredible views for visitors to enjoy as they traverse the different challenges in the sky.

Trampoline Zone

For those with boundless energy… this is the perfect part of the park! There are multiple elements to the zone, which include:

The Main Court: the highest action space, with over 18 interconnected trampolines extending right up the walls. Kids will leap from mat to mat, bounce off the walls…or just show off their new skills.

The Free Running Court: also known as parkour, is designed for kids who love to go wild. This is the place to practice their tricks and jumping skills. They can impress their friends too!

The Giant Air Bag: adds more action to the jumping experience. Bouncier, rounder and definitely entertaining.

Sinking Ship Kid’s Playground

Surrounded by soft sand, this is the place for the little ones to have their own playground… and they can play as much as they like, have fun, and enjoy themselves to the fullest. This is the “Sinking Ship” themed playground, exclusively for the little buddies to go on the swings, the slides, the teeter-totter, the monkey bars, the playground climbers and so many more.

Adapting a stunning natural aesthetic with light Robinia wood and utilising sunshades for a chance to cool down, this play park will help ignite their imaginations whilst avoiding too much heat from materials such as metal under the hot Cyprus sun.

Giant Air Trampoline

Need we say more…?! A giant trampoline for the little ones to enjoy, surrounded by a safety net and the perfect way to work off the boundless energy.

Partnership Working

Working with Melco Resorts & Entertainment on such a pivotal project has been a genuine pleasure for Greenspan.

We spoke with Robert DiFulvio, Senior Design Manager for Melco Resorts & Entertainment, with whom we worked closely on the build from concept through to completion.

Robert said: “Back in 2019 when we first started talking about having an adventure park, Greenspan were brought on board as we were very happy with the work they had done previously.

Greenspan came up with the design with some direction from us – where some of the activities became more and more “adventurous” in themselves as the plans progressed. We added more levels to the high ropes courses, for example, and introduced the trampoline park.

There were three different theming concepts originally and it was decided the park would be inspired by Kolossi Castle – a former Crusader stronghold on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 kilometres west of the city of Limassol, Cyprus. So, the basis of the design is ruins, rocks and stones.

I enjoyed working with the Greenspan team very much. The communication was very clear, very good and very concise. I wish every project would run as smooth as this one!”
