About the Project

Mad Hatter’s Adventure Golf…it’s magical madness!

Visitors can now enter a magical and immersive world of Alice in Wonderland. Players start by heading down the rabbits hole and into a topsy-turvy world where each of the holes become “curiouser and curiouser”.

Located at the popular Hartford Golf Centre, this 18-hole adventure golf course was designed and built by Greenspan Projects for this family-friendly venue to encourage players of all ages and abilities to come and enjoy the beautiful game.

Hartford Golf Centre wanted to create something unique and magical for their guests, to enhance their current offering of golf, a Trackman driving range and stunning event rooms. Alice in Wonderland is one of the most famous children’s books ever written. It became a success from the moment it was published, in 1865. Since then, it has been translated in 80 languages, adapted for theatre, television, and today it is one of the most quoted works in English literature. Lewis Carroll the author, was born in Daresbury, not far from Mad Hatter’s Adventure Golf Course!

It seemed only fitting that the theme surround this local legend; where Alice’s adventures are ones of wonderment, fun and fantasy. When designing the course, there was so much to explore. Our creative design team conjured up some incredible ideas alongside the client, which included a tunnel to lead players into wonderland, carved statues of the characters, warped mirrors to make visitors feel big or small and even an overgrown Alice within the White Rabbit’s house! There is also a giant teapot water fountain, the Mad Hatter’s giant hat, a chessboard hole and The Red Queen’s Palace.

Visitors can even sit on The Queen of Hearts’ throne, or within a giant overturned teacup… before putting through playing cards and looping the loop past Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee!

Since launching in July, the course has had some amazing feedback:

“Really great little set up kids had fun the weather held out and the staff are brilliant! Really would recommend.”

“Brilliant evening playing mini golf 🙂 times well spaced out so you don’t feel like you’re chasing the group in front/being chased. Great theming throughout and interesting holes ❤️ will definitely be back!”

Jen Barnes, co-owner of Hartford Golf Centre, also added:

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Greenspan. From our initial brief through to completion Greenspan have held our hand through the process making our adventure golf journey as stress free and enjoyable as possible.

From our first meeting and brainstorming session, Greenspan grasped immediately the direction, look and feel that we wanted to take with our adventure golf. They then bought our ideas to life with the most magical designs, imagery and ideas- in fact they nailed it from day one!

We are thrilled with the quality, attention to detail and materials used to create Mad Hatter’s Adventure Golf. The Greenspan team, from designers, creators, builders, painters, landscapers are all passionate about the theme and creating a course of fantasy and fun. Each hole tells the story of Alice in Wonderland and visitors get to encounter wonderful wooden carvings of Lewis Carroll’s iconic characters, walk through towering mushrooms and winding streams. Each hole is a work of art, providing a visual feast for all our eyes.

We were working on quite a tight timescale to deliver the adventure golf as we wanted to open for the start of the school summer holidays. However, Greenspan felt they could deliver the project on time and they have. They’re contractors worked hard, including several weekends to keep the project on track. All third party contractors have been very professional and helpful.

We’ve also been grateful to the wider Greenspan team who have spent time with us both on site and over the phone to share their experience and help us maximise revenue and deliver a first class visitor attraction.”
