Did you know that around the world, June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month?
National Eat Your Vegetables Day on 17th June is a great reminder to us all to include our 5 a day as part of a healthy balanced diet. At Greenspan not only are we are enjoying some vegetable snacks in the office today, but we thought National Eat Your Vegetables Day would be the perfect opportunity to highlight one of our customers, Lotmead Farm in Swindon.
Lotmead Farm Pick Your Own Vegetables
Since the 1980s, Lotmead has been a great day out for families. It was originally established as a Dairy Farm and remains so today; you can watch over 250 cows being milked every day, as well as enjoying their pick your own fruit and vegetables. Over 30 years later, they’re still going strong and have diversified to include a small animal enclosure and nature trail. There is also an exciting play area called the Strawberry Thief Trail, which was designed and constructed by Greenspan Projects.
This year, Greenspan have been contracted by Lotmead Farm again to create a second play area aimed at children up to the age of 13. The Strawberry Factory is a hand-crafted wooden structure providing an amazing space for pre-teens to explore and play with varying levels of exciting physical challenges including walkways, platforms, climbing frames and a tube slide.
Lotmead was chosen as The Farm Retail Association’s Pick Your Own of the Year in 2016 and 2017, and a finalist in 2019, too.
The importance of eating your 5 a day
Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. The UK government still advises people to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Whether enjoyed as part of a main meal or a snack, vegetables contain important vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin B6, provitamins, dietary minerals and carbohydrates. They also contain a variety of other phytochemicals, some of which have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties.
Many vegetables also contain fibre which is important for gastrointestinal function and another benefit is the essential nutrients that vegetables contain that are necessary for healthy hair and skin.
A balanced diet consisting of the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables may help lower the risk of heart diseases and type 2 diabetes. The potassium provided may help prevent the formation of kidney stones and may also help to decrease bone loss.
