Good News for the Visitor Attraction Sector…and the forecast is looking great!

Figures just released by Visit Britain/Visit England in its Annual Review 2016-2017 show a strong growth from inbound tourism with both an increase in visitor numbers and visitor spending. This is contributed to by an increase in the number of Brits taking more holidays at home. The first half of 2017 saw an increase in domestic, overnight holidays in England up 7% with visitor spending up 17%.*

So, what does this mean for the Visitor Attraction sector?

A general increase in visitor numbers across the country means that there is huge potential for visitor attractions to tap into this increase and encourage more people through the gates, and hopefully increase visitor spend.

Looking more closely, this general increase in visitor numbers is evident in many of the visitor attraction sectors. The latest visitor attraction trends data published in July 2017 shows positive growth with outdoor attractions generally performing well in 2016. Interestingly this tallies with slightly drier, warmer than average weather for most of the year.

We’ve highlighted some of the categories that have seen the largest growth in visitor numbers:

Greenspan works with a wide range of visitor attractions, and the growth figures obtained by Visit Britain/Visit England correlate with our experience of the sector. With a large number of projects throughout 2017, including farm diversification, adventure play, theming, indoor play, animal attractions, and adventure golf, to name but a few, Greenspan have worked hard to ensure that visitor attractions are making the most of every opportunity to increase their visitor numbers and visitor spend.

With Visit Britain’s forecast of overseas visits to the UK increasing by 6%, and visitor spend increasing 14%, the growth trend looks set to continue. The challenge is how will visitor attractions grab the opportunities that this growth brings

Hendra Holiday Park

Hendra Holiday Park is an award-winning holiday park located close to Cornwall’s north coast, near Newquay.

Hendra are Visit England winners, scooping a Bronze Award in the Camping, Glamping, and Holiday Park of the Year category 2023. They also went through to the Visit England finals after winning Gold at the South West Tourism’s Holiday Park of the Year. Hendra is a five-star destination, home to bespoke Hendra holiday homes as well as touringcamping, and caravan pitches to suit everyone’s holiday needs.

The word Hendra is Cornish for ‘Home Farm’ which is perfect for this family-run site, set up in 1972. They are home to a huge range of family-friendly activities and amenities, ranging from Oasis Fun Pools – one of the largest indoor fun pools in the South West, to live entertainment and kids’ activities.

Hendra Holiday Park asked Greenspan to design and build a 9-hole Palm Beach themed Adventure Golf Course for the opening of their 2024 season. Our designers took inspiration from the surrounding coastal towns when coming up with the initial concept design, with the intention of bringing Newquay’s fun, vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere straight back into this site. The team were able to achieve this by incorporating sea themed creatures, treasure chests, a revolving flashing lighthouse, life-sized surfboards and a gigantic deckchair – perfect for your family photos!

It was important for us to work closely with the client, be fully transparent and take them on the Greenspan journey. Ensuring that the final installation, not only reflected the initial concept design, that the client saw and loved, but exceeded their expectations was crucial. We have designed this course so that it can be played during the day and into the evening, by people of all ages and abilities to enjoy and create memorable moments that will last a lifetime. – Chris Marais, Project Manager.

Keeping it local… Our team pride themselves on supporting local companies and suppliers when completing our projects, which can be seen in the landscaping of this mini-golf course. All of the planting areas and rock edgings are constructed by locally sourced products which not only supports local businesses in the area, but also reflects and enhances the local environment.
