About the Project

American Golf ‘The Squirrel’s Lair’ Adventure Golf Course

Greenspan were selected to design and build a bespoke woodland themed adventure golf course for American Golf in Rossendale, inspired by the beautiful surrounding rolling hills of the countryside.

The course has been fondly named ‘The Squirrel’s Lair’ and features an 18-hole journey through different sections with varying levels of difficulty, making for enhanced playability and fun for all the family. Visitors can enjoy the mystical woodland and immersive experiences across the course, including an interactive rope pull raft across the water. There are also woodland audio effects, life-like carved wooden animal statues and the course also features imaginative landscaping to amplify the mystical woodland experience, with lighting to ensure the fun can continue even when the sun goes down.

With a driving range and golfing academy already in place, American Golf in Rossendale were looking to enhance their visitor offering to appeal to families and young adults. Boosting their already existing popular attractions proved to be a productive endeavour with the amount of space that could be utilised – perfectly located overlooking miles of lush green Lancashire countryside.

Now available to the public seven days a week, the attraction was officially opened by Councillor Jackie Oakes, the Mayor of Rossendale. Jackie was joined by George Hughes, aged five, a rising star who has been playing golf since he was 18 months old and has raised thousands of pounds in memory of his late father by completing golfing challenges throughout the Northwest.

Also in attendance was Paralympic swimmer and Rossendale-born Thomas Hamer, 23, who achieved a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and won a gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Children from St Peter’s School, St Joseph’s School, St Veronica’s School and St James The Less School, also attended and were amongst the first to try out the new course and pick up some tips and tricks from George.

Since opening, the facility has attracted visitors from far and wide and has generated multiple five-star reviews on Google.
