About the Project

Greenspan Projects were delighted to engage with Active Kids Adventure Park to design and build a brand new indoor play area for their popular venue in Perth, Scotland.

The company saw an opportunity to expand upon their existing offering of outdoor play and farming attractions, and completely overhauled an existing barn… by knocking it down and creating the perfect playscape space! As the original barn was around a third of the size, the expansion has allowed for the attachment of new, re-designed buildings for the café and separate rooms for parties.

Active Kids Adventure Park prepared the new space – and handed it over to Greenspan as an empty shell to start the build – which became a blank canvas for us to work our magic on…

Initially, the design  incorporated more of an authentic woodland theme, yet the ideas soon began to take shape to include more of the fun farm favourites in keeping with the park’s existing offering. Utilising robinia wood for the structure, however, was a unanimous decision. At Greenspan Projects, we love the rustic aesthetic of this beautiful natural wood. Robinia is naturally a quirky material in its nature – so what you can create is a fun, playful twist on a natural playground. In our experience, this is what children love… it’s not regimented and uniform!

Once the plan was officially agreed, we set out the structures and the key features of the main towers – which were all built on site, allowing for an amazing insight for the client, allowing them to see the build really come together. We always make sure we capture the build step by step visually in pictures and in video to monitor the journey and process… as these are moments that you can’t really get back. Each build point is critical to allow for each component to work – such as the rope bridges meeting the necessary parameters, and being safely supported correctly in line with the technical design created by Greenspan. Safety and playability is of paramount importance throughout.

What is unusual about this projects is that the play is on two levels. The client has also created an S-shaped ramp halfway through the building, from one level to the next. Greenspan have been able to incorporate this into the design of the play… a minor shift to the level but makes it more unique.

Once the child steps onto any part of the structure, the journey through the play allows for climbing through tunnels, crawling, sliding, balancing, traversing rope bridges, and even leaping across giant foam rollers! There’s also an interactive projected floor for an even more immersive experience…

If the children need a break from play, or fancy a tea party mid-way, there’s even a miniature table and chairs for this. Climbing nets also allow for clambering across the structure this way and that… so no experience is ever the same. The entire floor and ramp also feature a shock-absorbent substrate with artificial grass for added colour and texture. Aesthetically, this brings the woodland theming a whole extra green element.

And last but not least… the murals. They are completely hand painted, bespoke and beautiful… which is the pièce de résistance of the indoor playground.

With this project, we have been lucky to work with a large space to help us to include such a variety of play. This has created a real eye opener… we know children will walk in and instantly their interest will be piqued… and excitement will start to grow!
