Arcade-Themed Mini Golf Course Design Elevates Kingston Entertainment Venue

When Urban Fun set out to shake up Kingston’s social entertainment scene, they had a clear vision: create a venue where everyone could play. Bowling, axe throwing, AR darts, curling lanes, karaoke rooms, and an arcade all under one roof, designed for groups, families, and friends looking for high-energy fun.

With their first site in Reading already open, their second location on the outskirts of London needed something that would set it apart. That meant a mini golf course design  that would add something distinct, encourage competition, and work for every type of visitor walking through their doors. That’s what we set out to design.

Bringing Arcade Nostalgia to Life

The result? A 9-hole mini golf course design centered on gaming nostalgia. The course recreates classic arcade and party games that guests instantly recognize:

  • Racing themed hole with a tyre loop-da-loop challenge running beneath an arcade racing machine
  • Beer pong with oversized party cups as targets
  • Pinball machine with a vertical board, pins, and colored scoring zones
  • Plinko-style drop board where balls bounce through pegs
  • Basketball arcade hoop shot with scoring zones
  • Bowling alley lane with pins and hidden target holes
  • Coin pusher game with an angled table requiring precise timing
  • Ring toss arcade game with center and outer rings
  • A claw machine where landing the shot gives players a real claw attempt for prizes.

Every hole transforms a game that you know into a putting challenge. The beer pong cups route your ball to different finishing positions based on where you land. The pinball board redirects your ball using pins, just like the arcade version. And finally, the claw machine rewards a good putt with an actual prize opportunity.

The mini golf themes tap into nostalgia while creating immediate engagement. Players see beer pong or a claw machine and immediately know what to do, which drives competition and gets groups playing right away.

As a multi-attraction provider we also delivered multiple custom illuminated beer pong tables as part of the project to add yet another unique element to the venue to help set it apart and take fun activities to a new level.

Complementing Urban Fun’s Multi-Attraction Model

The mini golf course was designed to work seamlessly with Urban Fun’s multi-attraction model. Families with kids use it as their starting point before exploring the arcade or curling. Friend groups treat it as a competitive warm-up, letting the energy build as they move from beer pong putts to axe-throwing. The nostalgic design gets everyone talking and competing right from the start.

Since opening in December 2025, Urban Fun has been seeing longer visits and repeat bookings. The course gives them something distinct that sets them apart in Kingston’s entertainment scene, exactly as envisioned.

When Theming and Strategy Align

Family entertainment centers and multi-attraction venues face a commercial reality: every attraction must justify its footprint. That means driving dwell time, creating repeat visit triggers, and delivering experiences guests want to share. When a mini golf course design is developed with those objectives built into the strategy, it performs.

The right theming creates shareable moments. Great gameplay keeps guests returning and smart design strengthens the venue’s identity. We start by understanding what makes your venue different, then build on it with theming and design that amplify your brand. When those elements align, mini golf stops being just another activity. It becomes the reason guests walk through the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answering key questions we receive about our modular mini golf solutions.

Modular mini golf is the term we give to our timber-based, indoor mini golf systems, for which we maintain a library of many different “base” designs that can be extensively customized to suit the client, included but not limited to:

  • Custom vinyl wraps, paint and grass colors
  • Range of edging and capping materials for a particular aesthetic
  • Custom designed and built props and features unique to your course
  • Custom LED accent and interactive lighting features
  • Immersive Audio and Video Displays
  • Choose from Manual, Digital or AutoScoring Technology
  • Extended application of theming to your wider venue

Some brands refer to modular golf as their portable solutions for mini golf, but we would consider our modular product to be a semi-permanent or permanent installation depending on the specification.

Our Custom Classic modular mini golf holes start with a timber base hole design that our designers then customize to your preferred playability and theming. Boutique golf is another type of indoor mini golf where instead of each hole being a standalone unit, the holes are generally designed to be integrated into the venue structure and/or each hole is individually designed and built from scratch for the space.

The space required for indoor mini golf depends on the experience you are trying to create. Modular mini golf is designed to be extremely space efficient even when needing to adhere to ADA/DDA accessibility requirements. We recommend that the minimum amount of space required for 9 holes is around 2,000 square feet. Our team will work with you from the outset to ascertain what number and configuration of holes will work for your space.

The answer depends entirely on how the business is structured and there is no single model. The most successful mini golf operators have designed their revenue strategy around their venue concept from the outset, rather than treating the course as a product with a fixed commercial return.

There are broadly three models in operation:

  1. Mini golf as standalone attraction – Where green fees are the primary revenue driver. this model works where the course itself is compelling enough to be the destination, typically where the design, scale or location is distinctive enough to drive footfall independently.
  2. Mini Golf as an F&B led venue – Increasingly the more commercially robust model, the course is not expected to carry the revenue weight on it’s own. Mini golf functions as the anchor attraction, (the reason why the guest visits) but the majority of revenue is generated through food and drink. Many of the most successful mini golf venues operate on this basis. The attraction drives dwell time and group bookings while the bar and kitchen capture high-margin F&B spend.
  3. Mini Golf as part of multi-attraction venue – An increasingly popular format frequently found in hotels, resorts, cruise ships and FEC’s looking to create destination venues. In this context, the course contributes to the overall experience mix, supports longer visits and helps the venue appeal to a broader audience, but it sits alongside other revenue generating activities rather than anchoring the model alone.

Understanding which structure fits your audience, location and investment level is the starting point for any serious conversation about a mini golf project. Greenspan works with operators across all three models and can advise on which approach is most likely to perform in your specific context.

In fact we can, and have! – Whilst not part of our standard offering, we have successfully designed and delivered a modular mini golf styled course for the deck of a cruise ship, taking an existing design and selectively sourcing the right water and salt resistant materials to replace timber and other elements to create a mini golf course that can withstand anything the high seas throws at it.

Yes, this is one of the most commercially compelling use cases for a  mini golf in general right now. Stadiums and arenas are increasingly under pressure to generate revenue on the 300+ non-event days per year and activity-led hospitality formats are a proven mechanism for driving midweek and off-season footfall.

A branded mini golf attraction can serve as a standalone attraction, integrate with existing hospitality and F&B spaces, or be designed as a flexible asset that works across multiple activation formats, from corporate hire to public access social events. Greenspan can and have designed stadium solutions for both permanent and semi-permanent formats depending on operational requirements.

Yes, Greenspan mini golf installations are backed by product and installation warranties. Details are confirmed at the proposal stage based on the specific product specification and scope of works.

We’d encourage any operator considering a mini golf course investment to ask any supplier about both the product and installer warranty. These are separate guarantees and both matter for a commercial installation.
