Themed Adventure Golf Design Transforms West Virginian Park into Regional Attraction

When Lewis County leadership set out to expand their community park, they had a clear vision: build something that would serve their 17,000 residents while drawing visitors from across West Virginia and beyond.

The park already offered recreational activities, but the team were looking for something distinctive to put Lewis County on the map as a must-visit destination while supporting multigenerational recreation and bringing families together outdoors.

That’s when Greenspan came in.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Lewis County approached Greenspan to deliver a turnkey solution from design through installation. The result was an outdoor adventure experience featuring:

18-hole adventure mini golf course

High ropes course with ziplines.

Integrated water feature designed as part of the landscape

The high ropes course sits directly above the adventure golf creating a unique, integrated experience that combines adventure and play in one space.

Honoring West Virginian Heritage

The design reflects West Virginia’s identity at every turn. The adventure golf course design features a cave, waterfall and bridge, while hand-carved wooden animals highlight local wildlife. Heritage elements, including a coal mine cart, railroad signage and a water wheel, enrich the experience, resonating with residents, and leaving a lasting impression on the visitors.

Working with the Terrain

The site presented a unique challenge: building on the side of a hill rather than flat ground. Careful engineering was needed to manage drainage and ensure the water feature flowed naturally downhill, maintaining both safety and functionality

Since opening in October 2025, the Extreme Adventure section at Lewis County Park has attracted more visitors and drawn interest from surrounding counties.

What different themes are there for adventure golf?

Theming is what transforms a putting surface into a destination people will travel from miles around and even across continents to play. The right creative concept lifts ticket pricing, drives social media sharing and creates venue identity that compounds in value over time.

We have created hundreds of different themed courses in our 50 years of being a company. The classics are Dinosaurs, Pirate, Aztec and Jungle and Ocean to name a few, but we also create a lot of woodland themed courses that are unique in that we utilize as much of the natural environment in which the course sits as possible rather than using artificial theming. We will build around mature trees, use robinia wood and natural stones to create edging and guardrails and even carve props out of old tree stumps.

Its also quite popular for venues to theme based on their local area, county or state, for which we custom design and fabricate miniaturized local landmarks and objects of historical influence.We also complete a lot of work for brands and owned IP, such as the project with Circuit of the Americas, where we created an Formula One racing themed course that miniaturized elements of the raceway and featured a full size F1 car and their famous observation tower as theming elements.

Greenspan are, separately to mini golf providers involved in the design and build of themed immersive environments for theme parks and resorts, where the representation and protection of IP is extremely important, most notably Lego® Ninjago and Gruffalo themed bedrooms for Legoland and Chessington World of Adventures respectively. Most recently we are working with one of the most well-known IP in the world; Guinness World Records on their first ever permanent venue at the O2 Arena, London, for which we are providing the “record breaking” attractions.

How much does it cost to build a commercial adventure golf course?

Cost varies considerably depending on several interconnected factors and any supplier quoting a fixed price without understanding your project in detail should be treated with caution.

The starting point is always the site. The size, topography and condition determine what’s possible. A level, accessible plot with minimal required groundwork is a different build proposition to a site requiring significant earth movement and drainage infrastructure. Site preparation costs alone can vary as much as the course build itself.

Design of both the course and experience follow that. The number of holes whether it’s 9, 18 or more will also impact the cost somewhat, but cost is typically more around area being covered with turf and the extent of the theming required.

Logistics and global supply chain conditions also potentially impact the delivered cost of any project, particularly for remote locations or countries with limited logistical infrastructure.

To get an accurate figure, the conversation must start with your site, your audience and the commercial brief.

What return on investment can i expect from an adventure golf course?

How long does it take to design and build an adventure golf course?

Probably not the answer you are looking for, but it varies so much. Greenspan are often involved pre-planning application and actually help clients achieve planning permission, this timeline can vary a lot before a concept is even thought of.

The design process internally will depend on the size and scale of the project. A simple 9 hole course with minimal custom theming elements might take a month or two, but three loops of nine holes all with unique themes will almost certainly take longer.

The build stage is equally as dependent on the complexity and scale of the project. Best thing to do is speak to our team about your idea, because chances are whatever your project is, we have done something at a similar scale and complexity before and can give you indicative timelines for design and build at that time.

Do our mini golf courses come with a warranty?

Yes, Greenspan mini golf course installations are backed by product and installation warranties. Details are confirmed at the proposal stage based on the specific product specification and scope of works.

We’d encourage any operator considering a mini golf course investment to ask any supplier about both the product and installer warranty. These are separate guarantees and both matter for a commercial installation.
