Experience the British Woodland Indoors

West Lodge Rural Centre is situated in a secluded area of Desborough within easy reach of Peterborough, Northampton, and Leicester. The Dee family has been farming at West Lodge for three generations, opening the Rural Centre in 1995. West Lodge is a working farm with livestock, woods, fields, streams, and machinery. The family has a mission to share their enthusiasm for the countryside, providing hands-on experiences for adults and children with animal handling experiences, pony rides, piglet racing, and much more!

On a mission to regenerate their indoor play barn, the Rural Centre asked Greenspan Projects Ltd to help bring a bit of traditional British woodland indoors. Our dedicated design team created an immersive, fully themed playscape that features an outstanding centrepiece – a giant hollow oak tree with an enchanting tree house looming from the upper branches. The treetop hideout not only provides a brilliant vantage point and lookout but also a giant spiral-slide down to the forest floor.

The centrepiece is surrounded by three woodland zones and an orchard zone, allowing children to seamlessly flow around the playscape using net bridges, platforms, slides, stepping posts, a climbing wall, and ledges. Every minute detail has been thought through by our experienced design team to provide a truly authentic play experience, with inspiration taken from local farming connections, including young tree saplings, fruit harvesting, and natural, local stone quarrying.

The design incorporates designated seating areas, one of which sits on a mezzanine floor, providing fantastic views of the impressive floor to ceiling playscape. Our design and build teams have worked together to ensure that this truly impressive playscape design offers an authentic British woodland experience. With the design spanning the entire height of the barn, it was vital to ensure that the design worked across all elevations, our dedicated 3D team was key to ensuring this was achieved by producing 3D visuals of the entire barn area.

Greenspan’s brilliant build team worked on every detail, from the artificial quarry wall, oak leaves, gnarled oak branches, and bark textures, to provide visitors with an authentic, indoor piece of British woodland.

The latest figures show that revenue is up 61% since the opening of the indoor play barn

Hendra Holiday Park

Hendra Holiday Park is an award-winning holiday park located close to Cornwall’s north coast, near Newquay.

Hendra are Visit England winners, scooping a Bronze Award in the Camping, Glamping, and Holiday Park of the Year category 2023. They also went through to the Visit England finals after winning Gold at the South West Tourism’s Holiday Park of the Year. Hendra is a five-star destination, home to bespoke Hendra holiday homes as well as touringcamping, and caravan pitches to suit everyone’s holiday needs.

The word Hendra is Cornish for ‘Home Farm’ which is perfect for this family-run site, set up in 1972. They are home to a huge range of family-friendly activities and amenities, ranging from Oasis Fun Pools – one of the largest indoor fun pools in the South West, to live entertainment and kids’ activities.

Hendra Holiday Park asked Greenspan to design and build a 9-hole Palm Beach themed Adventure Golf Course for the opening of their 2024 season. Our designers took inspiration from the surrounding coastal towns when coming up with the initial concept design, with the intention of bringing Newquay’s fun, vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere straight back into this site. The team were able to achieve this by incorporating sea themed creatures, treasure chests, a revolving flashing lighthouse, life-sized surfboards and a gigantic deckchair – perfect for your family photos!

It was important for us to work closely with the client, be fully transparent and take them on the Greenspan journey. Ensuring that the final installation, not only reflected the initial concept design, that the client saw and loved, but exceeded their expectations was crucial. We have designed this course so that it can be played during the day and into the evening, by people of all ages and abilities to enjoy and create memorable moments that will last a lifetime. – Chris Marais, Project Manager.

Keeping it local… Our team pride themselves on supporting local companies and suppliers when completing our projects, which can be seen in the landscaping of this mini-golf course. All of the planting areas and rock edgings are constructed by locally sourced products which not only supports local businesses in the area, but also reflects and enhances the local environment.
